Complete MultiPlus Solution for Fiskerstrand Verft
MultiPlus Solutions reinforces their position as a leading supplier of ERP solutions for the shipyard industry by signing a new agreement with the shipyard Fiskerstrand Verft in Ålesund, Norway. - The agreement also represents a very valuable client reference, thus entailing a profit beyond the strictly financial aspect, says Managing Director of MultiPlus Solutions Mr Per Olav Helgeland. Fiskerstrand Verft, located right outside Alesund, offers services within new constructions, docking, repairs, maintenance and reconstructions. The shipyard, established in 1909, has more than 100 employees, and including hired laborers and sub-suppliers between 250 to 300 people work at the shipyard. "Fiskerstrand Verft has first hand knowledge of MultiPlus through the use of MultiPlus Drawing and Document Management, and the experience has been entirely positive. This combined with the fact that MultiPlus Solution specializes in the shipbuilding industry, makes us certain that MultiPlus is the right ERP system for us. The solution will enable the company to manage all parts of its business activities through one system, whether it involves payroll, purchasing, stock control, or project follow-up," explains C.F.O. at Fiskerstrand Verft Mr. Geir Sandvik. TOUGH COMPETITION The quality of the ERP system is of critical importance and has a direct impact on the company's level of competitiveness in the market place. The competition between the various shipyards, both locally and globally, is tough. "There are a lot of qualified players out there. We need to ensure optimal performance in all parts of our processes. Shipyards often enter into long-term contracts with fixed budgets and relatively high degrees of uncertainty and low profit margins. An administrative solution like the MultiPlus Shipbuilding Solution is absolutely necessary to be able to participate in such projects," says Sandvik. The MultiPlus Shipbuilding Solution is one of the few ERP systems that is tailor-made for the shipbuilding industry. This, combined with a long-standing experience from the industry, is the recurrent reason for the increasing number of shipyards choosing MultiPlus. "We consider the agreement with Fiskerstrand Verft to be a result of many years of excellent co-operation, but equally important is our position as a leading supplier of ERP solutions to the shipbuilding industry. In the shipbuilding industry one deals with almost exclusively large projects with eminent rewards and significant risk scenarios. MultiPlus is generally chosen by a shipyard because of our know-how within the field, as well as our strong reference client list," says Helgeland.

Jonassohn Supplies Pyrotechnics to Queen Victoria
Italian Pains Wessex distributor Jonassohn has supplied all the pyrotechnics for the latest luxury Cunard cruise ship, Queen Victoria. Jonassohn SRL was founded in 1949 by a Norwegian master mariner and started commercial activities in 1967, specialising in the safety of life at sea sector. Based in Genova, the company opened its inflatable liferaft service station in 1976 and was the first company to introduce the Marine Evacuation System. The first MES were fitted to the Italian Navy ships San Giorgio and San Marco in 1987. The Queen Victoria, which weighs in at 90,000 tonnes, was officially named by HRH Duchess of Cornwall, accompanied by HRH the Prince of Wales, in the UK port of Southampton in December 2007. The five star luxury liner has been likened to a floating palace with 1,007 cabins capable of holding 2,000 passengers and 1,000 crew. The cruise liner, which is currently on her maiden voyage - a round the world cruise which began in January - has two outside swimming pools, a conservatory filled with exotic plants and a retractable roof, several bars and lounges, a casino room, a museum, the first theatre at sea with private boxes, a library, an arcade of shops inspired by London's Burlington and Royal Arcades, and a glass-domed roofed nightclub. She is the first Cunard line ship built by Fincantieri, one of the most technically advanced shipbuilders in the world who have built more than 7,000 vessels, at the Marghere Shipyard near Venice and is registered to Southampton, UK.

Another Cruise Operator Chooses Thordon Pollution Free Propeller Shaft Bearings
T Mariotti Shipyard of Genoa, Italy has ordered Thordon seawater-lubricated COMPAC propeller shaft bearing systems for two new 50,000GT cruise ship being built for Seabourn Cruise Lines, the Carnival Corporation luxury brand, for 2009 and 2010 delivery. This will be the eleventh and twelfth Carnival-owned ship fitted with seawater lubricated COMPAC bearings since the first installation in 1998 on Grand Princess. The COMPAC tapered key bearing system is similar to those supplied by Thordon to the ten other Carnival-owned ships. "Water lubricated bearings are the present for many of our ships; I would like to see them for all of our future ships. In the COMPAC bearing, clean seawater is pumped to the 'A' bracket and the aft stern boss bearings as the lubricating medium and it flows through the bearings to the sea. No aft oil seal and no oil means lower in-service costs of the shaft line and, as important, no pollution worries. The added advantage is that the COMPAC tapered key system allows inspection of the bearing and shaft journal without pulling the shaft. To date, our experience is that COMPAC bearings with Inconel journals will mean worry free shaft lines for the life of the vessel,"said Chris Joly, Principal Manager, Marine Engineering, Carnival Corporation and plc. There are currently over 500 ships operating with pollution-free COMPAC propeller shaft bearings.

The collaboration is the result of a dialogue that took place after both parties' participation at the maritime InfoDBlaS conference in Tulcea (Romania) last year. InfoDBlaS' main person, Dr Gelu Kahu, played a key role in establishing the collaboration. Dr Kahu has been a central figure within maritime industry in the Black Sea area for years and thus has an extensive network in this part of Europe. According to Managing Director of RomLotuS Group, George Tudorie, the company wishes to offer a comprehensive solution that includes both infrastructure and ERP software - which is why MultiPlus Solutions and their fully integrated application were chosen.

Most Exotic: Who is Karl?
The 'Karl Carstens' was delivered by Howaldtswerke Deutsche Werft AG to the Deutsche Bundesbahn for its future deployment as a rail-ferry in 1986. The diesel-electric ship is driven by a DC-propulsion engine with two propellers. Six MaK engines type 12M 282AK generate the electrical power output of 14,400 KW via generator operation with the starting pressure being provided by five 3-stage air-cooled WP80 L each with a capacity of 75 m±/h. The ship was sold to the Hays Ships Ltd. Shipping Company in the year 2000 under its new name of 'Karl' and shifted to the Danish harbour of Nakskov to be laid up. "Karl" was taken over by Helix, at Vicor Lenac in Croatia in 2006 and has been converted to a floating production platform having the project name "Commandor 5000." On receipt of an enquiry, Sauer & Sohn could deliver a spare part package for the 20 year old compressors (with design status from the early seventies) promptly ex stock. A comprehensive database, which was also able to answer the question, "Who is Karl?" makes it possible to always support our Sauer customers in this way. For your future spare part orders please remember to always quote the serial number, IMO or new building number of the compressor and the shipyard of the ship.

New Cooling Unit in Cartridge Design for WP200, WP240 and WP400
In order to make the assembly/disassembly easier for production as well as for maintenance purposes, Sauer & Sohn have developed a cooling unit in a cartridge design. Compared to the design, in which the cooling pipes were fixed rigidly to the two ends of the housing, the new system has an exchangeable 'slide-in' unit where the pipes are soldered onto a retaining plate, a technique which is used by Sauer also in its submarine compressors. This new design allows thermal expansion of the cooling pipes. CuNiFe10 is still the cooling pipe material which can be used for both fresh water and seawater cooling. An additional advance is that we have been able to improve the cooling performance for the cooling compressed air. Thanks to this, other downstream components, for example, valves or compressed air processing elements are subject to an even lower thermal load. Sauer will incorporate this new construction model as standard from 2008.

Tanjung Offshore Berhad chooses BASSnet Fleet Management Systems
Tanjung Kapal Services Sdn Bhd (TKS), a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Malaysian-based publicly listed company, Tanjung Offshore Berhad (TOB), has entered an agreement with Norwegian fleet management systems provider, BASS for the purchase of BASSnetTM integrated ship management systems. During the initial first half of 2008, BASS will install BASSnetTM Fleet Management Systems comprising crew management, payroll, planned maintenance and procurement systems onboard the company's fleet of offshore support vessels and offices on land. The deal, covering seven vessels, is expected to significantly improve fleet management efficiency to Tanjung's offshore operations. According to Captain Hassan Ali, CEO of TKS, the agreement is consistent with the company's policy of working with quality suppliers. "We were seeking a supplier with the tools, experience and capacity to provide a robust system in line with industry standards," he says. "After an exhaustive evaluation process, we selected BASS because of their modern and superior software, extensive experience and strong regional presence." Mark Ravi, regional manager for BASS, says that the agreement marks another milestone for BASS in Asia. "We view this contract as part of a growth trend for our business in Malaysia and the region, where demand for BASSnet Fleet Management Systems is increasing, especially in the oil and gas sector." Driven by rising oil prices and increased demand for offshore services, TKS plans to expand its fleet and improve its maintenance/operations division by using efficient information management systems. Once the BASSnet solutions are installed, users on board and office workers on land will be able to collate crew information, monitor inventories and streamline payroll processes. The system will also allow users to access vital data from a centralised database repository system. With BASSnetTM, TKS will find it easy to comply with regulations and conduct performance monitoring of their entire crew. Captain Hassan is looking forward to the implementation process. "To succeed, TKS and BASS will work closely to configure and implement the system to improve our fleet management operations. Once installed, the system will enable TKS to establish best operating practices in line with BASS' vast global customer base," he says. "BASS is internationally recognised for its capability to deliver a comprehensive fleet management system and has supplied solutions to some of the industry's top global companies." Mark Ravi notes that unlike many competing software providers, BASS is established on 140 years of maritime experience, and serves about 80 customers and more than 1,000 ships worldwide. The company is backed by a network of regional offices, and has the technical capacity to deliver software upgrades on demand. "As new features and modules are developed, BASS will continue to integrate the new modules into BASSnet fleet management systems without any interruption in service." In addition to the software solutions, BASS will supply consulting and project services.

BASSnet£ Certified by the Major Class Societies
BASS, a global leading software provider of fleet management systems, servicing the shipping and offshore industries, today announced its BASSnet™ software suite has been certified by five major classification societies. The societies, all of which are members of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) are: Lloyd's Register of Shipping (LR), Bureau Veritas (BV), Germanisher Lloyd (GL), Det Norske Veritas (DNV), and Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK). In essence, the certifications provide shipping companies with the assurance that BASSnet™ - Fleet Management systems have been through rigorous independent testing and verification by the five different class societies. These class approvals give ship owners and ship managers' significant flexibility to manage fleets classed by different societies and to benefit from the discounted fees and simplified survey arrangements offered by the applicable class. According to Mr Haakon Dalan, General Manager, Product Management, ship owners can achieve significant cost savings with class approved software. Some class societies offer 15% discount on the total machinery fee provided such software is used and satisfactory maintenance schedules are complied with. Additional savings can be obtained from the survey arrangement. "For example, no surveyor is required onboard for crediting of machinery components between annual surveys and you only pay for every component once during the Class period - even if the component is credited by the Class several times," he says. BASSnetT fleet management systems was first certified by DNV in 2004 while the other class' certifications took place during 2007. American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), however, does not provide such certification scheme for software although their verification of ship maintenance and surveys follow the IACS standards. "With the Microsoft ISV certification of BASSnet in 2006, this certification by the major class societies is another testimony of the superior functionality and the modern, future proof technology of this software," adds Mr Dalan. Developed on the Microsoft.NET technology, an up-to-date and future proof technology platform, BASSnet fleet management systems offer user-friendly interface and flexibility for users to automatically track vital operational data and ensure all aspects of fleet management are in compliance with mandatory regulations. With BASS growing customer community - the system is now used by more than 1,000 ships worldwide.

Who and What is Sauer-Nanjing?
The boom in the Chinese economy is something which everybody is talking about. Shipbuilding in particular is an area where the Chinese are becoming more and more dominant and would like to become market leaders. Almost all of the shipping companies that order new builds have already built or at least asked for an offer for a ship from one of the many Chinese shipyards. The quality of a ship is determined by the shipowners site supervisors but first and foremost by the agreed Maker's List. Each of the shipping companies are interested in agreeing upon as many manufacturers as possible with whom they have had good experience in the past, and whose products meet the high quality requirements for the type of ship. CHEAP PRODUCTS HAVE EXPENSIVE CONSEQUENCES For this reason, Chinese products are only rarely chosen for operationally important parts and parts which are relevant for safety such as starting-air compressors. If Chinese compressors are installed for specific reasons these often need replacement after only a short period of time. This was what happened to a North-West German shipping company. The argument that the compressor had only cost 500 USD and had been 'really cheap' was no longer an argument. Another important reason against the usage of these compressors is the lack of servicing possibilities and the availability of spare parts for Chinese products. IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR OUR CUSTOMERS Chinese manufacturers are pushing to set up cooperations and get licenses especially for engines and other large equipment. In this regard we would like to inform our customers about the status of the Chinese compressor manufacturer Nanjing Compressors Ltd. and the Sauer-Nanjing series of products which they offer for shipbuilding: Sauer Nanjing is not a licencee of Sauer At the beginning of the eighties Sauer and the State of China signed an agreement for the transfer of technology which referred to our old air-cooled and water-cooled starting-air compressors Our side of the obligation finished when certain prototypes had successfully been verified by a classification company There is no licence agreement unlike the Chinese manufacturer indirectly tries to make their customers believe. Since signing this contract more than 25 years ago Sauer has had no further contact to the company Nanjing. This partner has until now never been able to truly break into the shipbuilding market. In some cases, shipping companies, mainly from Hong Kong have contacted us asking about the availability of spare parts for Sauer-Nanjing compressors. We would like to point out the following in regard to this matter: Sauer has no information in reference to the feasibility of exchanging spare parts between Sauer and Sauer-Nanjing The Chinese supplier has never taken part in any quality improvement measures or technical updates Sauer does not have any information in regard to the current status of Nanjing design or other technical changes When you are purchasing a compressor please remember the following: Only Sauer compressors made in Kiel guarantee the high quality and reliability which is required by modern shipping.

Hull Stress Monitoring on Latvian Shipping Company's Chemical Tankers
R Rouvari Oy has recently introduced services in Russian for its Russian and Russian-speaking customers. The new language services proved especially useful during the recent delivery of the HULLMOS hull stress monitoring system HULLMOS for four handysize product and chemical tankers during the beginning of 2007. The systems, delivered to Latvian Shipping Company, consisted of four long-based LBSG sensors, an accelerometer and necessary software. The system was delivered according to Lloyd's Register ShipRight(Hss-4) class notation and rules for Hull Surveillance Systems. One special feature of the hull stress monitoring project was the exceptionally large integration requirements of the spec. The hull stress monitoring system was integrated with VDR, loading calculator, DGPS system, gyrocompass and speed log. Extensive integration with other systems provided synergy in operation - possibility for additional reference when hull monitoring system is set according to loading calculator and additional safety on hull monitoring data storage with VDR. Geographical dimensions for the hull monitoring data are given by latitude/longitude, speed and direction information provided by other systems. Hull stress monitoring systems were installed to enhance safe operation with this size of the vessels on northern waters. Additionally the data collected by the system will be stored for the later analysis. HULLMOS project was finalised in close co-operation with Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in Ulsan, South Korea.

JP Suaer & Sohn Host Agency Meeting Industry 2007 in Kiel
The Agency Meeting 2007 for the industrial market segment took place at the Steigenberger Hotel in Kiel between 10th - 12th September. This segment represents Sauer's greatest challenge as well as being the market which has the greatest growth potential. More than 50 participants from over 30 nations found their way to Kiel - from Australia to Brazil, and Syria to Norway. We started off proceedings, on the day of arrival, with a welcome dinner to give new and old Sauer representatives the opportunity to get to know each other. The evening proved to be surprising in several ways - the representatives from Bangladesh were able to talk to their colleagues from Serbia and Kosovo in Serbo-Croatian. After what turned out to be a very short night for some of our guests, the Managing Director, Harald Schulz, started the main event with a welcoming address at 8.00 am. For some of our guests, the first highlight of the morning was the tour of Sauer's factory. There were lots of new products on display including the WP6000 and the WP4325 ComBooster with integrated dyrer as well as a booster version. NEW INSIGHTS AND INDIVIDUAL WORKSHOPS The main aim of the meeting was to appreciate the different levels of knowledge of the different delegates and to increase this know-how as far as possible over the course of the two days. This is the reason why we divided the participants into different groups for the workshops. New representatives were given an introduction to the fundamentals of compressors, method of function and after sales. The more advanced could solidify their knowledge in concrete case studies. The subsidiaries and long-term representatives used the time to hold an open forum discussion focusing on aspects of sales strategy, product development and after sales service. To help promote communication, discussion and getting to know one another, our accompanying program took place in Kiel Castle and the final event was onboard the paddle-steamer Freya. After our two-day intensive program we all agreed on the fact that the meeting had been a great event. All of the representatives were positively surprised and had gained lots of new impressions to take back to their countries and to help further promote the industrial segment.

SHIP CONTROL, MEASUREMENT AND PROTECTION SYSTEMS E.D.I.T. is specialised in the installation and maintenance of: Systems of control and measurement of pressure, temperature, level, rotations, voltage, etc. Control systems of diesel engines, turbines, and ship manoeuvring Automated systems for control and protection of generators, diesel engines, turbines Systems of control, measurement and protection for loading and unloading tanks of liquids and gases Systems of measuring explosive and toxic gases Automatic control systems for inactive gas protection Supervisory systems of regulation and protection of boilers Electronic and pneumatic systems for control and regulation of pressure, rotations and temperature Inert gas systems ODME systems Gas ballast systems XTS-W bearing condition monitoring systems (as Gnomon Marine's authorised installer) Alpha lubricator systems CorrTran corrosion-protection transmitters for online monitoring Accurate oil-moisture analysis systems Fire extinguishing systems SEPARATOR ALARM SYSTEM For economical and safe operation of a gasoline separator or petrol separator, a separator alarm system is used to detect the gasoline layer thickness and / or top level of the gasoline in the separator. This feature is also a required item according to the EN 858-1:2002 standard. Apart from designations and general construction principles, this European and international standard also defines the functional requirements for separator installations. In keeping with the standard, gasoline separator installations have to be equipped with an autonomous alarm system. This alarm system is approved for use in hazardous areas, zone 0. In due time before reaching the maximum storage volume (oil layer thickness) in the separator, a modern alarm system in keeping with EN 858-1 indicates by an acoustic and optical signal that the gasoline accumulated has to be removed. If it has to be assumed that an overflow will occur in the separator, a second probe will release an acoustic or optical warning signal in due time before reaching the highest level. The alarm system is a complete system consisting of several components, including sensors, a control unit, housing and a mounting set. The block diagram indicates the basic arrangement of the individual components. Depending on the application, three sets of warning systems are differentiated: Single-channel, storage volume or oil-layer thickness detection only Single-channel, overflow detection only Dual-channel, oil-layer thickness and overflow detection MULTIVARIABLE CORROSION MONITORING The CorrTran multivariable transmitter will monitor general corrosion, localised corrosion (pitting), and conductivity through a 4mA to 20mA signal and HART protocol in real time. The corrosion rate or a pitting factor is configured as the primary variable using a two-wire 4mA to 20mA output. The multivariable transmitter is available in a three-electrode configuration with a wide selection of probe types and electrode materials. Cunard MS Queen Victoria - Cruise Ship
The MS Queen Victoria is a UK-registered ship operated by Cunard. The vessel does not hold the designation of RMS as with other Cunard ships, signifying that they carry Royal mail. The MS Queen Victoria carries the tradition of naming larger ships after British Queens following the RMS Queen Elizabeth II and both RMS Queen Marys. She is the second largest Cunard ship ever built next to the Queen Mary II. FLOATING OUT The £270m MS Queen Victoria is a 90,000t cruise ship constructed by Fincantieri Maritimo in Maghera near Venice (the first Cunarder to have been built in Italy). Floating out of the hull and superstructure took place from dry dock in January 2007. "She is the second largest Cunard ship ever built next to the Queen Mary II." The vessel's maiden voyage from Southampton (its home port) took place on 11 December 2007, taking in the Christmas markets of Northern Europe. Tickets for this voyage sold out within 24 hours in April 2006. This was followed by a short cruise to the Canary Islands, with the first world cruise taking 107 days. The MS Queen Victoria made its first transatlantic crossing during the first part of the world cruise. The crossing to New York was made with the Queen Elizabeth II, culminating with the meeting of all three current Queen vessels. CONSTRUCTION The MS Queen Victoria is a hybrid design between the Vista-class of Holland America and the Spirit-class of Carnival. The ship has a passenger capacity of 2,014 with 1,001 crew and 1,007 cabins (creating a passenger to crew ratio of 2:1). Around 86% of staterooms are outside and 71% of staterooms have balconies. There is 10,000ft² of open deck space. KEEL AND CEREMONY The first section of the MS Queen Victoria&squo;s keel was lifted into place in May 2006. Six blocks make up each of the 325t sections, each complete with interior structure, cabling and ducts in a modular fashion. Eighty of these sections have been used. The ship was floated out in January 2007. Maureen Ryan was chosen as the ship's Godmother because she had served on all four Cunard Queen vessels. The ceremony also saw a gold sovereign bearing the head of Queen Victoria along with a euro placed under the main mast (the radar mast). The finished ship was named by a member of the Royal Family, the Duchess of Cornwall, on 10 December 2008. TECHNICAL The ship is 294m long with a beam of 41m above the waterline and a width of 36.6m at the furthest extent of the bridge wings. The draft is 8m and the height is 62.5m from keel to funnel. "The ship has a passenger capacity of 2,014 with 1,001 crew." The power for the propulsion and the ships systems is provided by six diesel engines, which include four 16 cylinder engines and two 12 cylinder engines. The diesel engines were fabricated by Wartsila and are of the Sulzer ZA40 design. Each of the cylinders has a bore of 400mm with a piston stroke of 560mm. The total combined power of all these engines gives the ship 63.4MW. The propulsion units are two podded (azimuthing) drive propulsors that were manufactured by ABB in Finland. Each AZIPOD is fitted with a fixed pitch propeller. Each of the pods distributes a maximum power of 17.6MW. There are also three bow thrusters each with a maximum power of 2.2MW. The vessel is also equipped with a pair of folding fin stabilisers, each with an area of 20m². The ship is equipped with three high holding power anchors (around 11t each). INTERIOR The ship has 12 passenger decks, with the majority of its public rooms arranged along Deck 2 and Deck 3. The main access corridors are on the starboard side and the public rooms mostly along the port side. The ship has seven restaurants, thirteen bars, three swimming pools, four whirlpools, a ballroom, and a theatre. "The MS Queen Victoria is a hybrid design between the Vista-class of Holland America and the Spirit-class of Carnival." Deck 1 accommodates the lowest level of the three-storey grand lobby and the 830-seat Royal Court theatre. Deck 2 hosts the mid-level of the Royal Court theatre, the casino, the Golden Lion Pub, the Queen&squo;s Room ballroom, Todd&squo;s English à la carte restaurant, the Chart Room bar, and the lower level of the wood-panelled library. Deck 3 features the upper level of the theatre, the Royal Arcade, the Midships Lounge, and the upper level of the library, as well as an exterior promenade. Deck 9 contains the Cunard Royal Spa and Fitness Centre, the Winter Garden lounge (with retractable glass roof and a central fountain and a colonial conservatory style), the Lido Restaurant (450 seats), and two outdoor pools. Deck 10 has the Commodore Club observation lounge and Hemispheres night club and meeting room. RESTAURANTS The Queen Victoria is supposed to be a classless ship but in practice the passengers are divided/segregated according to the restaurant they dine in, which is linked to the price of the cabin. The Britannia, with 900 seats, is the &squo;standard&squo; for regular cabins, the Princess Grill with 130 seats is the &squo;middle class&squo; for passengers occupying junior suites, and the Queen&squo;s Grill with 120 seats is the &squo;superior class&squo; for deluxe suite passengers. The other public rooms are all used by passengers on an equal basis. The Queen&squo;s Grill and Princess Grill have attached lounges and an open courtyard. There is also a Cunardia museum with a collection of company artefacts and a shop for Cunard enthusiasts.
